There are two types of fingerprinting for diamonds: geographical plasma fingerprinting, and organic fingerprinting and identification.
Geographical identification, or the identification of the specific geographical place where a gem is mined, is not precise and is some time away from perfection; however, it is incorrect to say that diamond fingerprinting does not exist at all.

A global body created to curb trade in diamonds that finance conflict has agreed to allow Zimbabwe to export limited numbers of stones from fields where the military has been accused of human rights abuses and smuggling, representatives of the diamond industry and advocacy groups said Friday. The agreement emerged Thursday at meetings in St. Petersburg, Russia, involving the World Diamond Council, an industry body, and a United Nations-backed group called the Kimberley Process, set up by countries, diamond industry representatives and advocacy groups to counter sales of so-called blood diamonds.

The “Dodd Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act” was signed into law by U.S. President Barack Obama. The bill includes a provision addressing ‘conflict minerals,’ requiring certain disclosures by publicly-traded manufacturing firms to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as to the source of gold used in manufacturing processes.

Russia rose to the top of the ranks in 2009 as the world’s largest producer of rough diamonds, according to data released by the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS). This dominance may be short-lived, however, because Russia’s rise was largely a result of Alrosa’s decision to continue producing, while other producers scaled back in the wake of the global financial crisis.

Untying the Gordian Knot of Kimberley Process

With apparent deadlock at its June inter-sessional meeting in Tel Aviv over the issue of Zimbabwe, the Kimberley Process appears to be at somewhat of a crossroads. The inability of members to reach a consensus decision, despite hours of discussions late into the night, on the report by the KP monitor for Zimbabwe that diamonds from the disputed Marange area were in compliance with KP standards, brings several of the Kimberley Process’ flaws into focus.
