DiaLab Diamond and Gem Forensic Laboratories South Africa filed the first fingerprinting patent for diamonds and gems to be used in the commercial reports of Diamond and Gem Certifications last week. The process is being followed by a new in-depth module of a certification process to eliminate fraud and illegal trading.
The joint venture project is to be the first of its kind whereas an electronic print of the diamond together with its properties are kept on a central database and could be referenced at any point and time. The global implications this might have for the Diamond industry could be gigantic.
If all diamond are tracked and monitored by a new certification process then it would be very difficult to hide any diamond from any illicit source.
The project comes after an in-depth study of the problems within the diamond and gem industry particularly the problems with the internet transactions across border trading and transport thereof. The Local industry is perhaps unaware of the implications this might have in the long term and further research is still necessary to decide how this “New Technology” is going to be implemented and controlled.
Technically it will leave no room for any dodgy sales or certifications. It is believed that a new certification mark is in process to provide a platform for a more transparent sales environment. The Chairman of Dae-Shin Limited HKSAR and DiaLab South Africa “Baron” Baretzky would not comment on these developments.
