Three U.S. senators have tabled a bill aimed at changing American policy, and specifically as it relates to diamonds.
The Zimbabwe Transition to Democracy and Economic Recovery Act would amend the Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act of 2001 (ZDERA).
The United States gave almost $300 million to Zimbabwe in assistance last year, according to Russell Feingold, one of the three senators along with Johnny Isakson and former presidential candidate John Kerry.
The bill seeks to a create a statement of U.S. policy towards Zimbabwe, provide for technical assistance to the unity government, support land reforms, and take action to stop illegal diamond deals.
“The bill states that the US should continue to provide humanitarian assistance, promote trade between US companies and push Zimbabwe for the implementation of the power sharing agreement,” said a summary of the debate on the bill.
The senators also want U.S. President Barack Obama to be able to push for Zimbabwe to be suspended from the Kimberley Process.
